I work for a company that is currently not doing anything beyond our website. What would you recommend as a first step towards entering the social web? We are a non-profit, so are functioning with limited resources in terms of money and manpower.

Without a doubt, listen to the Social Web. Seeing what your current customers are saying about you (or, demonstrating quantitatively that despite your marketing efforts no one is talking about you) is an easy first step. Use Google Alerts and monitor your brand (and competition.) Going further, use the Techrigy, Radian6, Cymfony, or BlogPulse platforms to automate the process. There are starting points that fit all budgets (including "free.")
