I'd like to have the ability as an admin to send out announcements via the private message tool to the entire community population or groups of members.  I realize I can make use of the announcements module, but it'd be much more effective to message the entire community from time to time.

I'm sure some within the Lithosphere will be view this as spamming members.  But I'm just referring to sending instructional messages to take advantage of certain features or to select an avatar or to participate in a brand new forum.

It seems like this is a rather common feature in other communities and would be a great tool to help engage the member base.

I can see a lot of scenarios where one would want to send a message to more than one member. The role-based concept seems interesting:smileyhappy:. I'd love to hear more use-cases around that.

I had an idea I thought I'd float here to get group reactions...

Suppose as part of the rank system, there would be a box in which a predefined congratulatory message could be entered by the admin.   There would be a check box to auto send the message to members upon rank achievement.

This would allow the community manager to tailor some messages geared toward certain behavior triggers that were met.  These might recognize ranks for being especially active in the community, or for the time investment in terms of logins & minutes online, or recognition based - kudos, or other legacy ratings.

The message could also call out some of the new permissions being bestowed ...

In short, it would be a way that members could receive some personalized private messages from the community recognizing them on rank / role changes and increasing the positive impact of the achievement without burdening the mods & admins with a lot email duties.

Thoughts?

Great idea! Acknowledging users on their newly achieved statuses can be very encouraging and hence engage them further into the community. I would like to hear more thoughts on this idea.

Thanks for the feedback about the inconveniences you all are facing with other browsers. We are working towards better support for Safari and Google Chrome.

Problem: when I receive a new PM while logged into the forum, it will take until a refresh to see that I've received a new PM.

Suggestion: alert the user dynamically on the UI that a new PM has arrived, like a flashing box or a popup that a new PM has arrived. Or possibly an alert in the bottom right corner that a new PM has arrived.

Good one! We need a generic notification bar that displays updates on various events within the community. New PM alerts is a good example to start with. I am hoping we can get to this soon. I can't wait till we have a notification status bar..like Facebook:smileyhappy: Its a great way to keep the user addicted to the community. Kudos to this one!

The present PM system requires PM be enabled for a user role (could be 'on' by default) and that the individual user have PM's activated in the profile in order to send and receive PMs.

There are some limitations with this, and some suggestions for how new features could reduce some of the shortcomings of the simple binary on/off function today:

1) It may be desirable to turn off private messages, especially for mods / admins who may be out for several days / week and don't want their inbox flooded with impatient and frustrated members.   As suggested in another previous idea, having the ability to turn on an "out of the forum will return and respond on DD/MM/YY" message that would be sent to any member who sends a PM could be helpful.  With such a feature, there might not be a need to disable the PM function.

2) If a member turns off PMs, or has not reached a level where PMs are allowed, it is difficult for Mods and Admins to send them a PM with coaching, instructions, etc.  It would be helpful for Mods/Admins to be able to send the message anyway, and for the user to receive the notification - PM inbox to become active and show up in the header as normal.   Building on this, it could be helpful for the user to be able to only reply to the messages sent by the mod / admin if their PM function was otherwise not enabled for other messages.  As a subset of this, it might be interesting to have a message from Mods / Admins that must be read & responded to before further functions in the forum are permitted (consider members returning from a 48 hour ban time out who you want to ensure have read and agreed to conditions for continued participation )

Warning feature

I'd like to see a warning feature added.  It could be another item in the Options dropdown along with Abuse.  Clicking on it would pop up a PM pre-addressed to the forum member with a link to the offending message.  The moderator could then add any appropriate comments and send it on its way.  Quick and easy semi-automated handling of situations.

It would really be nice if a log of those warnings (and temporary bans, for that matter) were kept for each member that could be accessed via a link or displayed directly on the member's profile so that we don't have to try to keep up with someone's record either in our archives or the private board.

Thanks for the idea jloyless. To sum it up, you want a warning message sent as a PM to the forum member that is visible to other moderators on the forum member's profile in the notes section?

I'm getting ready to be away from my community for 5 days, which seems like a very long time since I'm logged in every day.   Many community members send me PMs, and tend to expect responses within a day or two, and of course many post openly, and may even call me out by name in their public posts.

It would be great to have some kind of feature / function that would flag all your existing posts with some messages indicating your "away from the community" interval, and also some function that would provide an auto answer all PM's during that interval informing the sender that you were away, and would read / respond to their PM after your return.

As it stands, I've updated my profile to message my abscence in my tagline, and turned off PM function on my account.   This last part troubles me, but I feel it was the better alternative to having a very full inbox full of increasingly vocal PMs.

Who else needs some kind of "gone fishin'  " sign to hang on their account while away from their community for more than a day?
