Social Bookmarking for all Community content (opt-in)

Status: Under Consideration

We have identified that allowing users to actively share their own content or that of other members could help grow the community and add value for our members.  Having seen the social bookmarking icons in the Ideas tool, how can we utilize this within all threads, or better yet, all posts?

I envision this as either part of the signature, i.e., check box "Add Social Bookmarking Bar to my Signature," or embedded in the User sidebar of each post (again, maybe an opt-in feature).   Alternately, if not available on a post level, add the bar automatically to the title-bar area (on right?) of the first post in a thread. This perhaps would be a community-level auto-opt-in setting with an opt-out checkbox for the message composer.

This is about choices on how to share content - both at the community level and the thread/post level.

This is a good idea! In fact our Community Team have recently been talking about this too.

Be nice to see this within Lithium and as mentioned it's already available for Blogs & Ideas so hopefully it's easy to implement.

This would be great. Potentially it would help us to increase the number of visitors at a great rate.

I agree that this would be great.  One thing worth mentioning is that it would be great to choose which social sites to include in the bookmarking/share section.  I just read an marketing tidbit this morning that asked people,

"Are you loading up email messages with social media add-ons just because it's the fashionable thing to do, or because you have a solid plan built on connecting with customers where they spend their time? He hopes it's the latter."

I saw this one coming:smileyhappy:. Good idea, no doubt. In order to be consistent with how we share the social bookmarking bar "share this" in ideas and blogs, we will have a similar way for adding the bar to forums. Question for you all: Does it make sense to have the "share this" option for all posts or only for the root message (thread)? I think the latter makes more sense.

I believe the following need to be considered, because it is true that implementing social bookmarking should be purposeful, not fashionable.

1. If Lithium is to include this feature it should be up to the Admins to decide "root message" vs. "per message" or "none."

2.  Inclusion of this feature should also be possible as a board-level option.  For example, we may want our "Product Discussion" board enabled for social bookmarking/sharing but not our "Customer Service" area as a means of promoting positive posts versus potentially negative feedback.

3. Social sharing could be part of the user's profile configuration/options.  This affords users control over which sites they subscirbe.

Ultimately, I see it like this:  Community level option to turn on or off social sharing, board level opt-out if enabled for community, and user configurable to opt-in and specify which sites to share.

Is this possibly a step towards Open-ID?  Pondering...

Social bookmarking should definitely be added to the core message boards.

If I were voting, I'd say that:

* Admin should be able to set the limits at the board, category and community level, and that bookmarking of all messages, not just root messages, should be an available option.

* Admin should be able to control WHICH of the social sites are included in the bookmarking options (and preferably in what order).
